Why aren’t more elected officials turning Donald Trump’s assault on the basic rights of both noncitizens and citizens into a major national scandal?
Politicians are loyal to their own establishment, & their-establishment’s entitlement, and NOT to the citizens they pretend they are “representing”.
That is a global fact, of the political system.
It isn’t somehow unique to any particular country, or regime.
Pretending otherwise is disingenuous.

Because the republican base likes it. They like what is happening.
If you don’t understand that the average conservative likes the authoritarian daddy figure punishing liberals and believes in white replacement theory, then you don’t understand why things are so bad.
And yet, if you ask them whether this describes their opinions (e.g., “do you believe in white replacement theory?”) most conservative voters will just be confused, wounded, or defensive. They don’t think of themselves this way because their bias remains implicit and unexamined by choice, and that’s why it’s so easy to brainwash them.
Let’s say a conservative casually describes scientific racism to you as a common-sense fact, without necessarily knowing it’s called that. If you told them what it was called, or tried to inform them with better science, they would likely feel insulted that you were basically calling them a racist, which they’re not.
But if instead you agreed with them and offered an anecdote from your experience that reinforced their existing bias, you would instantly build rapport and their desire to repay you that kindness would empower you to plant in their mind one new opinion for free.
Even if it’s a lie, they will want to believe it, and if it doesn’t conflict with what they already think is true, they might just take your word for it for now. They can always reinforce it later the way you showed them. Using this method, over time, you can completely replace the conservative’s old value system and sense of truth with entirely new ones that favor your own design.
Because in their heart, conservatives know for certain that they’re not racists, authoritarians, or any other type of bad guy. That’s impossible because they’re the good guys, by definition, and even if good guys aren’t always right they are certainly never wrong.
Also in Europe. Practically any other country, they’d already be discussing sanctions. Instead, fucking bilateral trade agreements.
Because both parties have either been pushing narratives to make these actions sound reasonable or capitulating and staying silent as the other party does. This is why politicians who stand in opposition to constituents when they’re propagandized into the wrong position are the only ones with any chance of getting us out of this.
Probably turns them on if I had to guess.
Where’s their urgency? It’s in managing their equity trading accounts.
Why ? Control. Both sides want it all and don’t care if they need to sacrifice the American people to get it.

They are not, but the leaders of the democratic party have no incentive to actually oppose any of this, because they’re still making money off of this. They don’t give half a shit about some brown people having their rights infringed upon, as long as their stock portfolio doesn’t change.
The democratic leaders are evil pieces of shit, and the only policy they actually have and care about is self enrichment.
Sure, they’re far better than the fascists, but that doesn’t mean they would give a shit about the people or their rights.
