I’m not entirely sure it wasn’t the other way around.

He probably knew some charges were coming years ago, and started adapting his output accordingly.

Oh for sure. He’s been soft-pedaling his right-wing transformation ever since the initial allegations went public years ago. The hard turn recently is probably exactly as you say, he knew charges were coming.

It doesn’t take much calculating at all. It’s just easy to convince right-wing audiences that sexual misconduct allegations are all a conspiracy by the Deep StateTM to silence them. It’s a pretty basic grift.

The moment someone starts going all “anti-woke” you know they’ve got something to hide and they are trying to get acquainted with the pardon-dealing industry.

Yeah. Forcing himself on women was entirely consistent with his public persona, but shifting hard right just to seek cover makes it so much scummier.

Pardon dealing industry? In the UK?

I’m pretty sure only 4 pardons have been given in the last 25 years. 1 was posthumous (Turing) and the other 3 were given to convicts who saved people’s lives while incarcerated.

I don’t think being anti-woke is going to help anyone get a pardon in the UK.

I do think it’s a grift, just not convinced it’s a grift for a Royal Prerogative of Mercy.

I don’t mean in the UK. He probably has done some of that in the US too.

He could flee and seek political asylum or something. The US has extradition treaties with the UK since 2003, but they are pretty much ignoring all laws and treaties anyway.

So it goes something like this:

    • Man rapes
    • Man gets away with it for a while
    • Man gets charged for it
    • Man joins the far-right

This explains his sudden turn to Christianity last year. He’s going to try the “God forgave me” defense.

Let’s just not mention that the “whichever new faith” we’re speaking of is the very rapey evangelical Christianity, while making sure that we randomly emphasize that Islam is rapey, which is then expanded into Muslims being rapey. All in a post that has nothing at all to do with Islam or Muslims or refugees or whatever other bogeymen we regularly like to demonize.

after a police investigation into allegations made following the broadcast of a Channel 4 documentary

"The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial.

Were the allegations not brought to the police before the tv documentary? Why didn’t the police investigate before? If so there should be an investigation and prosecution of those involved in the “non-investigation”.

This failure to investigate is an outrage, many people including me listened to Russel Brand in the 2010s, but the police failed to investigate and now has the gall to say “the defendant has a right to a fair trial”? Does the public not also have a right to a fail investigation and prosecution?

Were the allegations not brought to the police before the tv documentary?

I might be speaking out of my ass here, but it could be that the allegations were brought to the police first, but there wasn’t enough evidence at the time for the police to file charges, and then the documentary investigation turned up more evidence than the police had.

Quite possible it’s just a fuck-up. But really the police should be able to do what a TV documentary crew can do. I mean what is the police there for? (Socialist answer is obviously to protect the rich and powerful)

How many cases were not pursued because it wasn’t profitable and opportune to make a popular documentary for them? Inequality based on identity like gender is the core belief of fascism, so this is a serious problem to leave unfixed.
