A refund system for businesses that paid tariffs which the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Donald Trump imposed without the constitutional authority to do so is scheduled to launch Monday.

Importers and their brokers will be able to begin claiming refunds through an online portal beginning at 8 a.m., according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the agency administering the system.

It’s the first step in a complicated process that also might eventually lead to refunds for consumers who were billed for some or all of the tariffs on products shipped to them from outside the United States.

We paid an illegal tax and now corporations are getting our money back.

How is this not theft and equally illegal as the tariffs in the first place?

There are a number of class action suits that are trying to get the refunds funnelled back to the original consumers.

You aren’t American if you haven’t experienced repeatedly bailing out businesses with your tax dollars.

I knew this would be the route… gotta screw the consumers… but I was really hoping it would have been returned as a tax credit on your 2026 taxes. That would be the easiest way of getting the money back to those who ultimately paid it

I agree, but the thing is… it’s impossible to know exactly how much extra anyone paid (consumers), because most businesses probably ate some of the cost but of course had to pass most of it along. But it’s fuzzy, whereas what the businesses paid - there’s a record of that.

Nevermind that they passed it along…

It’s stupid and unfair and was illegal, but of course we can’t prosecute the President for anything…

So does this mean DHL is going to refund me the tariff fee they charged on a couple of my international orders in the last year?

Corporations paid for his election, who thinks this wasn’t a plan all along? Plain sight hidden tax which can also be used to boost corpo bottom lines and force inflation.

I humbly disagree. No business wanted tariffs[1]. They knew it would wreak havoc with higher prices, driving down profits. That they are getting this windfall was certainly not guaranteed at the outset.

Furthermore, Trump did this pretty unilaterally. Not after pressure from businesses.

So no, I don’t think this was a plan all along.

      1. Oh, I’m sure you can find an exception or two ↩︎

Yeah a condition of them collecting the tariff back from the government should be repaying their customers for tariff costs passed onto them. Otherwise it’s just largely another corporate handout.

Companies already increased prices more than the tariffs cost them and we paid them. Now they get extra profits on top of their profits while we don’t get jack shit. Companies won’t decrease prices back to pre-tariff levels after they get their refunds either so…fuck consumers I guess!

    Hurray I love capitalism!

Sounds and feels very much like the PPP scams during the pandemic.

But really guys, it’s the welfare moms and immigrant childcare workers that are scamming this country and the reason there are no more $1 burgers to be found anywhere!!! /s

Time and time again, it’s the end user/consumer that the buck gets passed to. The owner class gets bailed out by us from the problems they create for us, then they tell us there’s no money to be found to provide even the most base level of assistance. And when we pitch enough of a fit for them to throw us a few pennies, it’s shoved in our faces again and again as some sort of handout that ‘proves’ how reliant we are on them. Abuse tactics 101, and like the abused we don’t know where else to go.

I wonder if someone’s going to compile a list of a bunch of companies that raised prices due to the tariffs, and keep them up them after

Doesn’t matter. America are those corporations. The rest of us are just labor with no real rights. And we love them for it here. Such a said nation.
