I’ve chronic nosebleeds that just don’t stop without intervention. (Last time I went to the ER for one they told me that a normal adult male has 16 units of blood and that, when I came in, I had 12. I passed out 3 or 4 times.)
Almost every time I’ve brought this up, someone has suggested stuffing a tampon up my nose. Every doctor who’s ever seen me about nosebleeds has told me not to do that - not only do they not recommend letting noses bleed freely, but apparently tampons (unsurprisingly) expand as they collect blood, making them difficult to remove from nostrils.
Every time I’ve brought this up on Reddit or lemmy, I’ve been downvoted for saying it. I guess they make more sense for actual injuries, though.

I think tampons started off as bullet wound staunchers. Either way, they are made for soaking up blood.
They were not. But it is a bit of a laugh that it was a guy who invented them.

I wonder if they are actually effective for a gunshot or stab wound, for example
