Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
1·4 months agono but that’s my point, like… i THOUGHT people weren’t actually going around thinking that the mind is separate from the body like the brain isn’t totally connected to everything. Like people were just using the phrase cuz it makes sense. but i realized the “Pull Yourself Up from The Bootstraps” people really actually think that it is just mind over matter. Or even bring up free will and suddenly everyone’s like “noooo my mind is unaffected by the conditions of the body” and so on.

21·4 months agothat’s kinda a pointless question because we can’t verify?? you have a brain when ur born but obvs it’s a different kind of brain when ur old. the brain changes too so what is the “me” here? like my brain is different already from when i started writing this.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
1·4 months agoyeah lol i actually looked at the wikipedia article but like i don’t really get the probelm?? to me there obviously isn’t a disconnect and i didn’t realize other people ACTUALLY think there is? like i realized it makes a lot more sense now why some people think like “you can just WILLPOWER your way through” whatever. Like they ACTUALLY believe it’s a thing??

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
12·4 months agolol that makes no sense, i believe in spirits and all that BECAUSE i don’t believe i or anyone else is separate from the body. like i’m all this body, including the brain, and the body is totally tied up with it’s surroundings and how they feel like. so like, maybe it’s not a “spirit” in like some supernatural being but like subconsciously my body is picking up some vibe and my brain says “spirit” because i love the idea of ghosts and then i feel better when when i wish it to pass on or something. like maybe it was or wasn’t I don’t know but i felt something and did something and then felt different. like my grandma used to always wear this shawl and she really loved it and when she passed, i swear i could feel her presence IN THE SHAWL and i spent like a few weeks wearing it while i was sort of letting go of her at the same time and now i don’t feel the presence there anymore but it doesn’t feel sad, just right. like i still have the shawl but it’s like inert. which is totally different from what it was. there’s still like a whiff of her perfume in it too but it’s still inert. It REMINDS me of her but it’s still inert. but like i think even if she wasn’t literally born with the shawl, it became a part of her and it sort of had a dying process too.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
32·4 months agobut that’s not true tho, if you replaced my hand I’d be like “well I AM one handed now”, there won’t be a two handed me anymore so i’ll be a new me. and like if this was true, then transgender folk would have a hell of a easier time i think.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
1·4 months agolike that other person said “it’s all in your head”. Yeah? Ok let’s take from the other direction. the head believes it’s under attack somehow or like anxiety and then people are somehow supposed to be like it “can’t” affect the rest of the body? like “get a grip on urself”. How??

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
41·4 months agowell like most of the wellness programs i’ve seen. they only admit to like general “you’ll feel better” but otherwise it’s like they demonize it when someone’s brain doesn’t let them do some thing and somehow they’re just supposed to power through that.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•why do so many people think the brain is somehow totally isolated from the body?
22·4 months agoNo i mean even if they aren’t spiritual they talk in terms of like “willpower” or “patience”. what even is that and how is it somehow virtuous to have it if it’s not virtuous to have hunger or the need to sleep?

What a trip,!!!
