  • It happened when I was in kindergarten. I was sitting next to a friend on the bus and she got into an argument over something with the two boys across the aisle. Being that we were all 5 year olds, this quickly devolved into name calling. I particularly got into it with one of the boys and he threatened to punch me if things kept going. I though he was bluffing and we all continued with the verbal slap fight until the bus arrived at the school. At that point we got off and lined up to enter the building. Everything seemed to be over at that point. It was not. He delivered on his threat.

He was immediately taken to the principal and I was sent to the nurse. The next day all four of us had to apologize.

  • When I was around 9 or so I went on a road trip with my mother, grandmother, and sister. I believe it was the time we went to Savannah, Georgia. It was the second day of driving around noonish and we were thinking about getting lunch. At this point we were in southern North Carolina and for the past couple hours of driving we’d seen a number of billboards for some barbecue restaurant. So, the adults decided that’s we might as well try it.

Once we actually get to the place it’s a little run down and it’s also obvious that it used to be a Burger King in the 90s. Upon entering the little area that old Burger Kings had before the main room it’s clear that they’re using it as a kind of gift shop. However, it’s not a normal gift shop. It’s all pro-Confederate literature and memorabilia. We really should have left at that point, but my sister (about 1 year and 10 months old at the time) was getting pretty cranky, so we went against our better judgement and went in anyway. The food ended up being awful. The meat was overcooked and dry. Additionally, the only sauces they had were mustard and a mustard-based barbecue sauce.

  • My understanding is that it’s related to the decline of three and four engine planes. Originally airlines preferred them over two engined planes because they were safer, had greater range, and could carry more passengers. On the other hand, they were more expensive to operate due to requiring more maintenance and fuel. Additionally, these planes were larger and couldn’t get into places that smaller twinjets could. Eventually technology improved to the point that the (literal) costs of more engines began to outweigh the benefits to airlines. These days most passenger airlines only operate twinjets and the remaining tri- and quadjets are relegated to cargo.

  • Mom’s side of the family is Catholic and my dad’s side is super reserved, so I got nothing. Anything I know comes from school health classes (which were actually really informative) and the internet.

My mom also believes that this sort of thing shouldn’t be taught in schools (at all) because it should be up to the parents to decide what their kids should know about the subject. She also says that her parents never taught her anything.
