  • I don’t think that’s an extreme misrepresentation. Trump himself told them exactly what he was going to do, so there was certainly at least some amount of head-burrying-in-sand going on. The main message that was present on Lemmy but not in legacy media was that “Yes, he is in fact going to do what he says he will.”

There were two possibilities: either you thought he was a doddering idiot that wasn’t going to follow through on anything he said, in which case why in the nine hells would you choose him as your president? Or, he was going to do exactly what he said, in which case, why in the nine hells would you choose him as your president?

The problem is that most of the people who voted for him were being selectively optimistic about what he would and wouldn’t do. They let him be everything to everyone, and just hand-waved the glaring problems away.

I don’t know how you can fix this massive self delusion issue without fixing education and teaching people to think critically, but education has been under attack for nearly as long as I can recall in the US.

That said, I agree this whole “I told you so” attitude isn’t particularly useful, it certainly is cathartic, though.

  • “I said to them, was there any sign of love?” Trump said, recounting his conversation with released hostages.

“Did the, Hamas, show any signs of like, help? Or liking you? Did they wink? Did they give you a piece of bread extra? Did they give you a meal on the side? … Like, you know, what happened in Germany?” Trump said, absurdly comparing the hostages’ situation to the Holocaust, which murdered six million Jews.

“People would try and help people that were in unbelievable distress,” the president went on, suggesting that the Nazis were known for their generosity.

You can’t make this level of stupidity up.

  • Yeah, we need to be asking what the purpose of trying the child in question as an adult here is:

Rehabilitation - I think the juvenile system would probably be better suited for this purpose, so no.

Deterrence - I don’t think the knowledge that they might be tried as an adult has much bearing on their decision to commit the crime. I’d be willing to wager that people who do this sort of thing don’t much care what the consequences are. They’ve given up on themselves and their own lives.

Removal - This strikes me as the main motivator. If the system has no way to rehabilitate, and recidivism is likely, then what other option is there?

Retribution - As much as the US loves its retribution, usually it’s less keen to enact it on children. I’m sure some people would be happy about this aspect though.

Retaliation - I’ll let y’all judge off of the tone of the rest of the comments for this one.
