deal with the fact that we’ll have power outages during sleeping hours.
let me guess, you live somewhere winter doesn’t exist.

The OS is still unstable
sounds like you have a shitty TV. I have had 3 smart TVs of different brands and price range going back 10 years and I can’t think of a single time I’ve noticed any OS issues, because I literally never use the OS.
tries to apply a bunch of filters that need to be disabled
This has nothing to do with smart features, any decent TV should have image processing options. You will have better picture and motion quality (especially on LCD/OLED) with a properly configured TV than you will with a TV/monitor without any of it. Sure lots of options are not needed, but I wouldn’t say having options for how to do that is a bad thing.
has extreme lag unless gaming mode is being used
Yes, if you want zero lag, you turn on gaming mode. I’m not even sure what your complaint is here other than “having options is bad”.
and has stupid UI decisions like putting the audio level exactly where the subtitles usually are so that changing audio will obfuscate them.
Also has nothing to do with the “smart” functions, the exact same thing could happen with a poorly designed dumb TV or monitor as well.
Once every 24h I‘m also getting a warning that the tv is not connected to the internet, despite network connectivity being explicitly disabled.
again, this is not a thing for most smart TVs, you just have a shitty one.

at that point why even use AI at all instead of some other basic filler assets?

Probably but with all the idiots fueled by sunken costs and desperate to prove they were right to invest, it could still last a long time.
not necessarily with hardware though. now they are flush with investments and have holes burning in their pockets. everyone is trying to get in on the first stage of AI datacenters.
they may artificially extend the bubble, but rapid hardware expansion/refreshing will be the first thing to slow down or stop when they see it’s not providing value.

it’s not that complicated, just get a smart TV and don’t connect it to your network. quite easy to never use any of the built in apps if you only use your own inputs sources.

if you’re using a dedicated media box anyway, a smart TV not connected to your network is basically the same as a dumb monitor.

sure, there are gray areas, and apple does keep them somewhat in check. but also if you’re willingly installing facebook you should know that your privacy is already heavily compromised.

there’s a difference between malware and junk. ios is pretty much malware free. and i’m not sure you want apple deciding what is “junk” and what isn’t.

colloquially today most people mean genAI like LLMs when they say “AI” for brevity.
Because there’s this default assumption that data centers can never be powered by renewable energy
that’s not the point at all. the point is, even before AI, our increasing energy needs were outpacing our ability/willingness to switch to green energy. Even then we were using more fossil fuels than at any point in the history of the world. Now AI is just adding a whole other layer of energy demand on top of that.
sure, maybe, eventually, we will power everything with green energy, but… we aren’t actually doing that, and we don’t have time to catch up. every bit longer it takes us to eliminate fossil fuels will add to negative effects on our climate and ecosystems.

or… maybe it wasn’t designed at all. maybe it is just a natural artefact of all big tech companies wanting to control the next big thing.

not judging by the absolute tirefire that is tiktok.

then you get unwanted chinese tech.

that’s the point, you can’t do that.

You have to think one step beyond this specific instance. Laws apply to everyone consistently.
So do you want to let cybersquatters fuck everyone just for the sake of fucking Lamborghini? Or is it better to get rid of these leeches who are providing no value to anyone but themselves?

“small government” is just a dog whistle for “lower rich people taxes”.

it’s easy to see it that way when a big corporation is involved, but average people and small businesses get fucked by cybersquatters too.
On balance I tend to side against the cybersquatters. They are not providing any value to anyone, just leeching dollars from the economy.
think about it for two seconds, jesus christ. Lots of places do not have water loop radiators and it is not an easy retrofit at all. This is not even close to a general solution.
also telling people “reduce your quality of life” is not a viable strategy to get the average person on board with supporting green energy.
