  • Not sure when the sale happened, but there was a recent video about the invention of the Blue LED from the past year which was really good, highly recommended. To me click bait implies the contents are not worth the headline / title / thumbnail, but old Veritasium and recent have kept up mostly the same level of quality IMO. I will say updating old video titles and thumbnails to juice the numbers was annoying, but the optimist in me figured that at least people who had not previously experienced old Veritasium got it recommended to them which is a positive.

  • Well this is why i wish he would put out more videos, to see his reflection of this almost 10 years later knowing what we know now that self driving cars are here, and not stuff that was in highly controlled environments. To me, Grey always seemed like someone who trusts computers more than people, so maybe he’d still hold the same stance, but i would be interested in hearing his thoughts rather than dismissing him because of something he said 10 years ago which hasn’t come true. I also vaguely remember hearing in one of his podcasts that he had gotten into a really bad car accident and actually didn’t drive for many years after that, so I’d imagine some of his admiration with self driving cars at the time was focused on them reporting being safer than human drivers. Who knows, but I for sure would like to see a 2026 version of the end of that video about solving traffic from him.

  • The one that got me was trying to make a grill scrubber made entirely in the US, failing to source all the parts domestically, being somewhat xenophobic in the process, and then having the audacity of selling the thing for $80 (or more) when the exact product exists already for half the price. At some point the whole point of the video changed from “rebuilding manufacturing in America” to “China bad”. I assume the attempt was in defense of the Trump tariffs, but the takeaway is the US is not in a position to manufacture things on a small scale, and throwing tariffs on it won’t change and people will just have to pay more to import items since they can’t be made locally.

  • The standard is called TOTP and Google became synonymous with it because they pushed it in the late 2000s for Gmail and have a large user base. Other sites did have systems beforehand, like Paypay which had a dedicated fob, but that was not widely used. Gmail was likely most people’s first experience with MFA and Google pushed their own Authenticator app (and didn’t really advertise that others could be used). As other sites got on board, it was easier to tell people to use the app they use for google to get their code, since you could assume people had the app.

Basically that made a situation where people who had a different TOTP app knew their app would work with “Google Authenticator” but for those without an app or using Google Authenticator, they were likely unaware of the interoperability and standards behind the mechanisms.

  • Problem is our whole legal system functions this way in the form of precedence. Also, since the DOJ (who reports to the president) can write a letter saying the president is authorized to do something previously that was illegal, that makes it ok, and then next time, the bar is pushed even further.

We were always taught that the 3 branches of government were there to prevent stuff like this, but when 2 of the branches have abdicated their responsibility to ensure checks and balances, this is what we get.
