Not only tools, Mojang themselves eventually provided obfuscation maps.

insert rant about Mozilla CEO

wdym “killed the whole company”? Nokia was always more than just phones. They are still around and one of the largest telecom equipment manufacturers.

Sorry for the downvote, but I see this take repeated here on Lemmy so often and it just makes no sense. This will not kill the FOSS app “ecosystem”. Nothing whatsoever changes for FOSS ROMs like LineageOS or GrapheneOS. And as long as there are FOSS operating systems, apps will be developed for them. If anything, this could drive mainstream adoption of free/libre Android forward, re-invigorating the scene through public outcry.
And to the people who propose fully jumping ship from Android to “Linux phones” because of Google’s recent changes, you would only make the app support matter worse. As someone who daily drives both a phone with LineageOS and one with postmarketOS (mainline-ish Linux), mobile app support is endlessly worse on Linux than the fallout from Google’s developer registration could ever be. That is not to say that Linux phones will not eventually get to a point of reasonable maturity, but it is way too early and frankly utterly irrational to bury AOSP Android or needlessly hate on it.

Those Zionist boots must taste reeeeally good…

It’s a badge of honour

Those probably are the intern’s doing

Whatever you choose.

China could not care one bit less about the genocide in Gaza you stupid tankie, least of all about the Houthis. It is Chinese ships and goods in particular that the operation is protecting. This was just arrogant posturing from China, because they know fully well that the EU will side with Taiwan in the coming war.

The Swiss might be a bad example. They are easily the craziest, most nationalistic people in Europe. I’ve dealt a lot with Swiss from all kinds of backgrounds over several years, and with foreigners living and working in Switzerland, and I can confidently say that I have never experienced anything comparable to how normal and ingrained xenophobia and an endless vicious hate for foreigners are in Swiss culture. The average Swiss seems to despise foreigners (who make about 50% of the workforce, btw) and views themselves and their country as superior to anything that might exist in the universe. This is not only a rural problem, it is common in several cities as well, perhaps most prominently in Lucerne. Their xenophobia has also been institutionalised with the Swiss police of several cantons enjoying the harassment of foreigners as their favourite pastime.

Go outside and get a life. How can you be so miserable.

God forbid that people have opinions… Life could be fun, but we don’t want that! Seriously, your only reason for existence on social media seems to make other people’s day worse. That is miserable.

No it doesn’t, that’s your paranoia and your own preconceptions speaking.
This is literally not a problem with smartphones, the problem is about the software you decide to run on it. A smartphone is simply a very powerful pocket computer.
From my experience, the inverse is true. The only truly poor people I’ve met were very rude.

Why should it affect LW or any other (non-Texan) instance? Any rogue country with populists at the head can implement any arbitrary legislation. That does not affect Lemmy instances hosted in countries with reasonable governments. If Texas wants to enforce their rules (or punish for non-compliance), it is on them to approach instance admins or block the site in their corner of the global internet.

I cannot confirm. The phone I’m writing these very words on is a Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus from 2019 running LineageOS 20, and the AMOLED display is absolutely gorgeous and looks as good as today’s top-tier smartphone screens. But maybe that’s because this is a Samsung flagship, and Samsung is notorious for making kind of the absolute best displays for their flagships.

“Search engine” is not equivalent to “Google”.
And apparently Microsoft originally wanted to buy the rights all the way back in the 80s! It only took them 40 years…
